Lloyd’s Register (LR), Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN-ES) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the design of an ammonia dual-fuel MSC. container ships.
In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding, technical specifications and related design documentation will be developed for the 8,200 TEU twin-island container ship SDARI design option that MSC is using as the contract for the LR class.
This will enable the Mediterranean Shipping Company, one of the world’s leading container shipping companies, to select ammonia as the carbon-free base fuel for future new shipbuilding contracts.
As part of the project, SDARI will prepare the specification and design documentation for the dual-fuel ammonia option, and LR will verify that the design complies with safety standards and regulations for the use of ammonia as marine fuel. MAN-ES will provide data on engine design, ammonia fuel delivery systems and emission reduction.
Ammonia is increasingly seen as one of the most promising alternative fuels to support the transition to marine energy, as it burns without emitting carbon dioxide, and its stability and relatively reasonable energy to volume ratio create opportunities for long-distance transportation.
Nick Brown, CEO of Lloyd’s Register, said: “LR is delighted to be involved with MSC, SDARI and MAN Energy Systems on this landmark project to develop MSC’s new dual-fuel ammonia container ship. Applications are critical for our industry to meet emission reduction targets. established by the International Maritime Organization, and this cross-supply chain collaboration marks an important step in the energy transition of the maritime industry.”
Giuseppe Gargiulo, Head of New Construction at MSC, said: “The active collaboration between ship operators, ship designers, class societies and engine manufacturers has never been more important. -carbon fuels and the impact it will have on the operation of ships.
SDARI Technical Director Wang Gangyi said, “Under this MoU, we will provide technical solutions for the 8,200 TEU dual-fuel ammonia container ship developed by the world’s leading shipping company MSC. Projects like this are critical in helping us assess the use of ammonia risks and opportunities to advance and share this experience across the marine supply chain.”
Bjorn Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Engines at MAN Energy Solutions, said: “In order to meet our industry’s decarburization goals on time, we need to take a close look at all fuel solutions. Under this MoU with MSC, SDARI and LR is in line with our strategy. Our goal is to provide decarburization solutions to our trusted partners and strengthen the industry’s commitment to reducing emissions.”
