The highly anticipated Australian Men’s Masters Hockey Championship will celebrate its 40th edition with a 15-day mega event at the Gold Coast Hockey Center from 24 September to 8 October 2022.
The Men’s Masters Championship, the most attended event on the Australian national hockey calendar, has been suspended since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year’s event will feature 80 teams, around 1,800 participants (players, coaches, support staff and officials) and 300 matches in total.
Supported by the Government of Queensland through the Queensland Tourism and Events Agency (TEQ) and the Gold Coast Mega Events Council (MEGC), the 2022 Australian Men’s Ice Hockey Championship will be the most attended ice hockey tournament at the 2018 Commonwealth Games races.
Hockey Australia CEO David Priles thanked the Queensland Government and MEGC for their support and enthusiasm for the event.
“We thank the Queensland Government, MEGC and the Hockey Association for their cooperation and joint efforts in bringing the Men’s Masters to the Gold Coast,” Priors said.
Masters Hockey is one of the largest hockey groups in Australia and there is no doubt that players across the country will be looking to return to the national arena and represent their hometown or region after a two-year absence.”
“Apart from the action taking place on the pitch, I am sure the participants will have a great time enjoying everything the Gold Coast and its surroundings has to offer, making for an unforgettable experience.”
Tourism and Sports Minister Stirling Hinchliff said Queensland is home to Australia’s world-class sporting events.
“The Australian Masters Hockey Gold Coast Men’s Championship is a great example of how the sport capitalizes on the heritage of its infrastructure,” said Mr. Hinchliffe.
“The Gold Coast Hockey Center has been upgraded for the 2018 GC Commonwealth Games and continues to be a premier venue for community and major events.
“Events like the Masters Championship attract participants and spectators who pour millions of dollars into the Gold Coast business.
“The benefits of the Masters Championship will be felt throughout the visitor economy, from accommodation and transportation providers on the Gold Coast to hotels, restaurants and tour operators.
“We will continue to bring major sporting events to the Gold Coast as an early legacy of green and gold runs for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
“If life starts at 40, it’s fantastic to host the 40th Australian Men’s Masters in our city,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
“I expect the jokes at the post-match BBQ to be as good as the action on the field. It’s the camaraderie and playful spirit that makes these Masters tournaments such a fantastic event. Congratulations to Hockey Australia and the Gold Coast Major Events Association for achieving this goal.”
